The gloss is the intensity and trait of the reflexion of the gem’s surface. It depends largely on the reflactive index, the bigger the reflactive index is, the more intense the gloss is. It also depends on the gem’s polished degree and the structure of the aggregation. The better the polish is, the more intense the gloss is.
The types of the gloss are classfied as follows:
Adamantine luster: It is the gloss type manifested by the diamond. The gem which have this type of gloss is as follows: diamond, rutile, cubic zirconia, zircon and demantoid.
Vitreous luster: It is the gloss type manifested by the gems which have the moderate inflactive index, such as the redstone, sapphire, emerald, tourmaline and so on.
Resinous luster: It is the gloss type manifested by the gems which have low inflactive index and soft texture, like amber.
Pearly luster: It is the gloss similar with the gloss of pearl, like the pearl.
Waxy luster: The gloss is like the wax, like the turquoise and so on.
Silky luster: It is the gloss type manifested by the silk-like inclusions in parallel, like the Ying-Qing Shi and so on.
