The Transparency Feature of Gem

All gems have certain transparency. Generally speaking, the higher the transparency is, the more precious the gem is. The transparency has direct connection with the gem’s ability of reflecting, strong or weak. The more transparent the gem is, the stronger the reflection ability is, making the gem be clear and translucent. The strong refractive ability makes the gem sparkling, glittering and colorful that you cannot bear to part with. The transparency of the crystal gems, such as diamond, ruby sapphire gem, emerald and so on, have direct connection with their values, the more clearer, the higher the value is. The gem’s transparency has close connection with the gem’s color, lightness and gloss. The transparency can be classified as follows:

Transparent: When the light transmits the fragrance of gem or thin glass which is over 1.00 cm, we can see the image at the bottom side clearly.

Semi-transparent: When the light transmits the fragrance of gem or thin glass which is over 1.00 cm, the image at the bottom side is not very clear.

Translucent: When the light transmits the fragrance of gem or thin glass which is over 1.00 cm, the image at the bottom side is not very clear, but we can see the broad outline.

Opaque: The lights are all absorbed or reflected, we can see the image at the bottom side at all.

Most of the gems in the nature are transparent or semi-transparent. The transparency has close connection with the purity inside, impurity included, inclusion or crack level. The transparent or semi-transparent gems are often carved into the object, the translucent or opaque gems are often processed into plain gems. If the gem is transparent, its high reflection rate will make it more shining and sparkling.
