The Measurement Unit of Gem

In the early age of human society, as the precious mineral gem stones were relatively few, like the diamond. But the jade whose quality is much important than the weight is very common, people were much more interested in the gem’s quality than its weight, the measurement was not that accurate. But the European has paid special attention to the weight of the gem since several hundred years ago, starting to use Carat as the unit to weigh the diamond and so on. The reason why they used the Carat as the measurement unit is that, it was said that along side of the Mediterranean, there was a kind of tree, its seeds were called the Carob, whose weight are very close, almost 0.5 gram, so they were used as the means to weigh the precious gems. It was fixed legally that 1.00 carat was equivalent of 0.2 gram, and was introduced to the measurement of other gems gradually. In order to express the weight less than 1.00 carat, we divide it into 100 points, that is in point diamond is equivalent of 0.01 carat.

The diameter now is used as the means of measuring the pearl, calling xx mm pearl. We usually use “Li” as the pearls weight unit, which is equivalent of 0.25 carat.

In the circulation of the raw materials of the gems and jades, the gram and kilogram are also often used as the measurement unit.
