The largest diamond in the world is called Cullinan. It was found in the Premier Diamond Mine located in the Azania of South Africa on January 1, 1905. Its volume is 5 cm x 6.5 cm x 10 cm, which is equivalent to the fist of a man. It is pure and clear, with soft blue tone, which is the highest level in the field of diamond. Until now, it is the largest one ever found.
Cullinan is not a complete crystal, it is a fragment part of a largest crystal. In the early 1908, Cullinan was sent to Holand’s city Amsterdam where was the most authoritative in cutting diamond at that time. It was processed by Aspen Charles Company, the cost was 80.000 pounds. As the original diamond was too large, it should be smashed into several pieces according to the plans. The task of smashing the diamond was taken by the famous craftsman Aspen Charles. Cullinan was smashed into 2 pieces on February 10, 1908. The 9 large diamonds carved from Cullinan were owned by United Kingdom loyal family. Among them, Cullinan I and Cullinan II were once embedded on the crown of Queen Mary made in 1911, later it was taken down and collected by the Queen, replacing it with a reproduction of crystal. In 1919, another large diamond, weighing 1500 carat, was found in premier Diamond Mine. It was the third in weight around the world. It was also a piece of a large crystal, similar with Cullinan in color. Some people believe that it came from the same crystal with Cullinan, so it has no the special name.
