Chinese translate the gelite into opal. It is transliterated according to its English name. The history of opal can date back to the ancient Roman period. The ancient Roman considered the opal as Cupid’s son whose was the beautiful angel of lover’s heart. At that time, people discovered opal in a cave of East Africa, however, most people thought that opal came from India. So the ancient Roman used an ancient Indian word UPALA to name opal, meaning The Cherished Gem. They believed that opal is the most beautiful and valuable among all the gems. The Arabian believed that opal fell from the brightly shining universe. In the late 18th and early 19th century, because the Hungarian exploited the opal substantially and crazily, additionally the European pestilence, hunger and the downfall of monarchy, the opal suffered a great fall. In 1849, a German geologist discovered the Australian opal in the southern Australia. The products made in Australian opal came to market in 1890. At the beginning, people thought that these opals were not natural as they had never seen such pure and beautiful opals. Nowadays, Australia is the main producing area of opal, opal could be rated as the national treasure. The most famous producing area of Australia is the Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs in New South Wales, Peter Cooper in south Australia and Opa-Burton area in Queensland. In addition, there has been also fragmentary exploitation in the countries such as Mexico, Brazil, America, Honduras, Japan and so on, but no matter in quality and quantity, they can’t be comparable to the Australian opal.
