- Shape: sea water pearl is always like a normal round ball while most fresh water pearl is elliptic, oblate, rice-shaped, half round or pear-shaped. What’s more, there are more wrinkle on the surface of fresh water pearl.
- At the outer membrane, the membrane cell directly graft in the fresh water pearl mussels, and then a fresh water pearl is formed. Usually it can be cultivated for two to three years. But sometime it can be cultivated for nine or more than ten years. The internal layer is characterized by strong concentric structure of radiation and it can form pearl to make cosmetic products or make it into pearl powder. However, there is a nucleus in sea water pearl and most material of it is shell nucleus. There is a thin pearl layer on its surface.
- Size: usually sea water pearl is bigger than fresh water pearl. The nucleus of sea water pearl is seven to eight centimeters or even much bigger. As a result, it can form a pearl as big as ten centimeters. Since without a nucleus in fresh water pearl, it is usually much smaller, it is hard to find fresh water pearl as big as ten centimeters. Owing to this, the price of fresh water pearl is expensive.
- Density: usually the density of sea water pearl is smaller than fresh water pearl.
- The output of sea water pearl is low. Averagely, it can output a sea water pearl among three shells. But it is big and round with high quality. However, the output of fresh water pearl is high. It can form six to eight pearls or even more per shell. But the shape of them is different. Most of them are small. It is hard to find one that is big and round.
- The rate of alive: because of nucleus cultivation, the rate of alive of sea water pearl is 50%. However, among this range there are only 40% can form a pearl. The rate of alive in fresh water pearl is much higher with low percentages of good quality.
- Environment: most of sea water pearl is grown at the opened natural sea water while fresh water pearl is grown at relatively closed water.
- Medicinal: the medicinal value of sea water pearl is a little higher than fresh water pearl although the composition of them is almost the same.
- The glossiness of sea water pearl is good while fresh water pearl is so so, even some of fresh water pearl without glossiness. Because of this reason, those fresh water pearl with good glossiness are expensive.
