Some Countries That Produce Ruby

Sri Lanka is a country rich in ruby which has been famous around the world, with a long history of exploration. The ancient people called it the “Gem Island”. The country’s Ratnapura, meaning the gem city, is the main production area of the gem. The ruby mainly came from the ancient rock of the Precambrian, they became psephite after weathering damage, forming the boulder bed consisting of the ruby. The highland contains the ruby is formed by the metamorphic rock of granulite facies.

Thailand is also a famous ruby origin. The ruby mine locates in several areas of Thailand, like the Chanthaburi. The Chanthaburi was produced in the contacting zone of the thousand metamorphic xenoliths in the basalt. In the phyllite, the aluminium-silicates and bauxite melt out along side with these rocks’ contacting zone, forming the ruby. The rubies here are usually smaller, the original rock weighs 1 carat. The Thailand’s Chanthaburi ruby takes on maroon or rose red, poly-chip double-crystal growth, the ribbon and striation are flat and straight, with few inclusions. We can’t find the silk-like rutile inclusions, but the fingerprint-like inclusions. The color of Thailand ruby is dark, like the garnet very much. This kind of ruby is very hard to be up to the fine qualities of the Myanmar ruby.

The Pailin area of Cambodia also produces the ruby, but the production geological conditions are completely different with the Mogok ruby of Myanmar.
