Ruby is a kind of corundum in mineralogy. The word Ruber means red in Latin. In early age, some Europeans translated it into Zhao Dian-hong or Bizhu, just its name implies, the ruby has been symbolized as the luckiness and gracefulness.
The name “corundum” came from India, it is a name of mineralogy, there are many colors of the corundum in gemology, some are colorless or white, some of them are golden, yellow, red, blue, green, purple, brown, black and so on. Some of them are royal purple in the filament lamp, revealing callicarpa effect in the sun light.
The corundum mineral on the earth is very rare, they are often wrapped by the k-feldspar of other colors in the underground vein mine. The mineral that are wrapped by red k-feldspar is usually called red eye socket stone; the ones that are wrapped by white k-feldspar is usually called white eye socket stone; the ones that are wrapped by biotite is usually called raven mirror.
In the gem mineralogy, the order of the formation of the corundum is as follows: corundum-idocrase-diopside. The color of the corundum is rose red, the crystal takes on thick and big hexagonal prism phase crystal. The color of the idocrase is emerald, the crystal takes on fine columnar, plate-like aggregates, including the corundum. The color of the diopside is dark green, the crystal takes on fine columnar aggregates. In
the same geologic body, the crystalline mineral changes along with the physical and chemical environment. When the crystalline status is in the high temperature, the corundum will grow in the form of idiomorphic crystal, when the silica content increases, it will change into the form of idocrase, this is the idocrase in the early age; when the iron and magnesium content increase, it will change into dispside. Some gems have
special optical phenomena, because there are needle-like inclusions, they are also very regular, forming special angles. After they are processed into arc- wall surface gems or the hard light exposures to them, they can take on 6 radio star line or 4 line, we can see them sparkling and glittering in vision, so they are addressed as the “synthetic star ruby”.
